Julie Janeway, MSA, JD

Julie Janeway is the General Counsel and co-owner of Principled Consulting.  She has been a national and international business/ corporate, health law, and life sciences attorney for twenty-eight years

Julie graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Fuchsberg School of Law at Touro University with her Juris Doctor (J.D.) focusing on health law and international law. She also served as an Editor on the International Law Review, and Captain of the Trial Competition Teams, among other leadership roles at the law school.  Julie holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) with full minors in International Business and Law, Communications, Marketing, and Sociology, and a Master of the Science of Administration (operations and legal foci) (M.S.A.) degree from Central Michigan University.  She is quality improvement and risk management professionally trained and highly experienced. She has earned Post-Law Graduate Certifications in Asia-Pacific Region and North American Healthcare and Life Sciences Law and Compliance from Seton Hall University School of Law and is ABD in her Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration. Julie is licensed to practice in Michigan, the U.S. federal courts, and is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States.

Julie serves as the external General Counsel for several U.S. healthcare companies, and previously, she served as the Chief Legal Counsel for a U.S.-based  international healthcare and technology company operating in an additional four countries.   She has practiced with several leading U.S. law firms and in her last position she headed the Healthcare Law Department and practiced professional licensing defense, and national and international business/corporate, healthcare, and life sciences law.   She is also a nationally recognized expert in the drafting and design of comprehensive and fully operable  compliance programs, and the required supporting policies, procedures, and training.  She is recognized as a leading legal mind in the strategy and coordination of legal, compliance, and business activities to permit maximum corporate efficiency and success by bringing her decades of experience across a varied and unique business and commercial landscape.

In her years of law firm practice, Julie has provided significant client representation in the areas of national and international legal/regulatory compliance, risk management, business/corporate law (including development, defense, M&A, governance management, import/export, customs/trade, and other areas), broad-based healthcare and life sciences law (FDA/PHARMA, HIPAA/HITECH, and many others), and employment law, pharmacy law, PSO/PSES (PSWP) development, audit and penalties/fines response/defense/mitigation, independent internal and parallel investigation and management, contracting and other operations-based services in a wide variety of business and commercial environments. For the last 30 years Julie has also provided national and international business, life science, healthcare entities, scholarly institutions, and professional associations with a significant range of related education and training services, as well as policy development, program development and evaluation, legal and compliance issues and defense consulting, and other operational support services.  

For eighteen years Julie taught Healthcare and Life Sciences Law, Healthcare Administration, Healthcare Program Planning & Evaluation, Administrative Law, and Employment and Labor Law, among others, in the Masters’ and Doctoral programs as an Adjunct Graduate School Professor at Central Michigan University. She also taught senior-level undergraduate courses in fourteen different fields of law, including but not limited to Constitutional Law, Business and Commercial law, International Law, Civil Litigation, Crisis Response and Communication, Evidence, and Sports/Entertainment Law. For more than twelve years she has been an Adjunct Professor teaching Health Law, Healthcare Compliance, Healthcare Risk Management, Medical Malpractice and Licensing Defense, Medical Forensics and the Law, and the Law of Business and Corporate Organizations at Western Michigan University Law School.

She is a frequent presenter regarding current and emerging legal, compliance, risk, and other issues for numerous national and state healthcare and life sciences industry professional associations. She emphasizes the real-world application of theory through experiential learning and practical implementation. Julie has a tremendous talent for breaking down complex concepts into understandable (often quite humorous) and usable information, and she is a big fan of providing lots of good resources!

Julie is an in-demand dynamic speaker and trainer who sees the world as an interactive, practical learning environment, and a place to meet new colleagues, work together strategically and collaboratively, and continually improve the operation and delivery of life business, sciences, and healthcare services nationally and internationally. She has published extensively as the author of several books and book chapters, and a substantial number of legal white papers and peer-reviewed articles on legal, non-legal, medical, and medico/pharmaco-legal topics, and she has served as a legal commentator/contributor for ABC News and for numerous industry-specific publications.

Beyond her professional pursuits, Julie is married, has four cats, and tries desperately to get some sleep as often as she can fit it into her busy schedule.
